Floating Shelves

Use floating shelves as a minimalist way to display your favorite pieces, keep everyday essentials at hand, and add a touch of style to a Transitional or Modern kitchen design.

Creating a focal point is made easy by using floating shelves in a contrasting color to your cabinets. Try adding beautifully patterned wallpaper or tile behind the shelves for a designer look. Another great way to draw attention to your new wall feature is by adding sconces, picture lights above, or integrated LEDs into your shelves to illuminate your décor.

On average, floating shelves are around 2” thick to create a more balanced appearance next to heavier cabinetry and can hold up to 15 pounds per square foot. For the best results, follow your installation instructions and use all the hardware provided.

Open Cabinet Shelves

Combine open shelving with bookshelf cabinets and doorless cabinets. These partly open shelves let you use your cabinets as an open display to show off your collections.

Open cabinet shelves are a great way to get the floating shelf look without the price tag. They remain a popular option for displaying décor and cookbooks or storing organizational baskets. Among many options to achieve this look, you can use bookshelf base and wall cabinets, or ask your designer to modify a standard cabinet. The cabinet modification consists of removing the doors and adding a matching interior.

To make your open shelves look good, add a few decorative items that range in height, texture and color to add interest. Try stacking cookbooks horizontally and vertically while placing decorative plants around them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you buy extra shelves for kitchen cabinets?

Yes, extra shelving for cabinets can be purchased at any time through your CliqStudios designer. Every cabinet has pre-drilled holes with adjustable shelf clips so you can adjust your shelves to the perfect height at any time. Additional shelving will provide extra surface space to store dishes, spices, coffee mugs, and dry goods that will help you get more out of your kitchen cabinetry.

What is the difference between a shelf and cabinet?

Cabinets are the complete box seen from the outside that stores your kitchen’s food, cookware, and small appliances. Shelving is the flat surface that sits within the cabinet with adjustable height. Sometimes shelving can be more decorative like floating shelves that sit exposed on your wall. These types of shelves tend to be thicker and mounted to the wall.

Are open shelves cheaper than cabinets?

Open shelves can be more costly than cabinets, however, this will depend on the size and finish you choose. When it’s time to get pricing on any specific part of a remodeling project, remember that every unique request, design preference, and the size of your space makes your project completely custom. Pricing will always vary and there is no one-size-fits-all kitchen project.

Can cabinet shelves be replaced?

Yes, cabinet shelves can be replaced and easily purchased through your CliqStudios designer. To replace your shelves, simply lift the existing shelf to remove it from the cabinet. If you prefer a different height for your shelves, adjust the shelf clip height up or down. Check with your designer for accurate lead times on your order.

Is it cheaper to build or buy shelves?

The most cost-effective way to get shelves for your cabinets depends on your construction capabilities. If you are knowledgeable and have experience with DIY projects, building your own shelves will be the least expensive. However, keep in mind that cabinet manufacturers create shelving specifically made for your cabinetry that will also protect your investment. Each shelf is coated with a natural birch melamine that is easy to clean and will resist water and stains. Plywood with a clear coat will not have the same benefits.
