First-time home buyers, Cameron and Sunny, recently bought an older home for their growing family. Their disheveled 1957 Mid-Century Modern home was in rough condition and looked like it hadn’t been touched for decades. These homeowners needed a serious update that would make their home safe for the new baby while bringing it into this century. Mike and Carmine from HGTV’s Inside Out came to help solve the problem.

Big Kitchen Remodel Plans Ahead

Looking back, the old kitchen was surrounded by walls with partial overlay golden oak slab door cabinets. To make the cabinets look more dated, they were finished with brass hardware, soffits above, and white tile countertops. It was safe to say Cameron and Sunny were ready for a major change.

 

Mike and Carmine are co-hosts of Inside Out and combine their interior design and landscaping skills to create every homeowner’s dream design. During the initial walkthrough, Cameron and Sunny discussed what they were dreaming of for their kitchen. They loved the original style of the home, but wanted to modernize and add in lots of organic materials through wood and stone.

 

Another major goal was to make this remodel a ‘one-and-done' experience so Cameron and Sunny wouldn’t have to expand again for their growing family. Clean, modern, earthy and enough working space to accommodate in-laws were the main design priorities.

 

Partnering With CliqStudios

During the design process, Carmine partnered up with CliqStudios designer, Elise St. Michel. Together they came up with a new kitchen design to perfectly fit this growing family. The new kitchen is finished in Signature Plus line’s Newport door style in Silk and Fossil. This combination was the perfect option to modernize and update while bringing in the natural warmth that Sunny was hoping for.

New and modern kitchen features include a massive custom kitchen hood, built-in bench seating, tray dividers, roll-out trays, and endless drawer storage. If that weren’t enough, beautiful stone waterfall countertops, a matching slab backsplash, and gold cabinet hardware complete this gorgeous design.

 

CliqStudios designer, Elise, talked about her experience with Inside Out. “It was a positive experience. I felt a bit stressed at first, but we were able to do most of our meeting virtually which was super helpful to be able to go over options and make changes to the design as we were chatting."

Elise mentioned there were a few challenges with the layout of the kitchen. "We did have a lot of windows to work with in the kitchen where wall cabinets weren’t possible, so I had to make sure we had storage for everything in base cabinets that would typically be placed in wall cabinets. Also some of the windows that weren't being replaced were too low for regular base cabinets to fit underneath, so we did the bench area there for some storage and possible seating in the kitchen. We also added in some pantry storge into the mudroom and laundry behind to accommodate these items."

When asked about her overall experience, Elise said, "I would love to do it again. I have some background in broadcasting and TV production, so it was fun to blend my current design career with those interests too."

 

A New Home Oasis for the Family

Once everything was finished, it was finally time for Cameron and Sunny to see their kitchen remodel. Walking in, the homeowners were thrilled. Cameron said, “I feel like we’re in a house that’s in the right century now.” Sunny commented with a big smile on her face, “The way this flows feels so good. This is amazing...I’m so obsessed.”

Sunny continued saying, “It feels like the natural elements are coming through, but it’s like elegant and modern.” Cameron also added, “I love the big island. I can’t wait to eat breakfast here, and I can’t wait to eat breakfast with our son here. I’m so excited about that.”

 

Even Inside Out designer, Carmine was so excited he said, “I think this room feels fantastic now! We gave them this kitchen, living room, and dining room that is just spectacular."

 

At the end, Cameron and Sunny were discussing what their home used to look like and thanking Carmine and Mike, They said, “Everything was against the walls, but now it’s like you can face the living room! This means so much to our family, we can’t thank you enough.”

Sunny ended by saying, “We love it, like this is...this is our home.”
