Builder Todd Zitzkat of Southington, Connecticut, partners with CliqStudios several times a year for design services and cabinets for his custom built homes. In the home pictured below, classic painted white Shaker cabinets are the foundation of the kitchen design, which features an open layout. A large central island with seating is built from cabinets finished with beadboard paneling on the ends and back and topped with multi-hued granite countertop.

Modern pendant lights keep the feel contemporary. Dark wide hardwood plank flooring warms up the space, and classic crown molding adds a touch of elegance. Seating at the center island is provided by three dark wood rustic stools. A lively aisle rug brightens the work triangle, and the unique placement of the built-in microwave optimizes storage. A single glass door cabinet with interior lighting is an eye-catching display feature. Oversize windows above the sink and in the adjacent dining room open the kitchen to the outdoors.
