Retro TV Kitchen – The Fresh Prince of Bel Air
“In West Philadelphia, born and raised…”
We know two hard facts about the “Fresh Prince of Bel Air” kitchen. Number one, there is no better place in the world to do “The Carlton.” Number two, it’s ain’t small! Of course, what else would you expect to see in a mansion in Bel-Air? (Although the house seen in the opening credits is actually in nearly Brentwood.)
Having started in 1990, we still see a lot of 1980’s kitchen design influence in Mr. & Mrs. Banks’ kitchen. There is still a definite “country kitchen” aesthetic influence, as evident in the hanging copper kettles. However, the style has been clearly refined and many other tropes of the style have been done away with (such as checker/plaid) which creates a contemporary and cleaner look. Once the tile counter tops are replaced with something more modern such as quartz, this space wouldn’t look overly out-of-date even today, nearly 30 years later.
The cabinetry is framed, partial-overlay, and seems to be finished in a stain mimicking slightly distressed, ged wood. There’s no shortage of storage with cabinetry lining an entire wall, including a very inviting, sunny prep area in the bay window. A vertical plate storage rack rests above the sink, with glass-door upper cabinets displaying some of their finer wares. The kitchen is flooded with natural light, due mainly to the multiple floor-to-ceiling windows and French doors surrounding the kitchen table.
Although we have seen plenty of larger kitchen islands, we see Geoffrey often stirring something at the integrated gas cooktop. This, however, brings us to an unexpected discovery and unanswered question: If the gas range is on the island, then what is the large, wooden range hood doing along the back wall? (between the sink and the double wall ovens) It looks as though there could be an additional electric range top under the hood, although we were not able to find any images that were clear enough to provide clues. If you know what’s going on with that hood, please leave a comment below!
