What’s a Pull-Out Cabinet Organizer and How is it Different?

A pull-out cabinet organizer is a type of cabinet that’s often used to better organize kitchen designs. These organizers typically glide out of the cabinet easily and allow better access to the items stored within. This can be anything from roll-out trays, to spice pull-outs, to tray divider pull-outs. Standard cabinets, however, are generally designed with stationary shelves that require you to reach inside for any items you need. Waste Bin Storage

One of the most popular kitchen pull-out cabinet organizers is the pull-out trash. This is perfect for creating a clean, minimal look throughout the space. This storage solution gets your trash cans off the floor and out of the way while preventing waste odors from getting into the air.

The size of the cabinet will determine how many waste bins can be stored within one base kitchen cabinet. For example, if you are looking to have one waste bin to use for regular trash and another to sort recyclable items such as cardboard, you will need an 18-21" cabinet.

These pull-out cabinet organizers keep waste bins easily accessible while keeping the trash out of sight. You can choose either a cabinet with a drawer above or a full-height cabinet. The standard-size waste bin that fits seamlessly in these cabinets is 35-quartz. If you only want one waste bin within this pull-out organizer, then you will want to choose the 15” wide version.

Use Pull-Out Cabinet Organizers in Bathroom Designs

Beyond the kitchen, there are many ways to incorporate pull-out cabinet organizers within a bathroom design. A popular choice has been to include laundry hampers within large bathroom cabinets, especially within a large primary suite. This will keep the bathroom nice and clean, with dirty laundry out of sight.

When it’s time to throw a load of laundry in, you can simply pull it out and transfer the clothing over. It’s an especially clever space-saving solution if you do not have a separate linen closet for bed sheets and towels, or space to store a dirty clothes hamper.

This same style of cabinet and pull-out organizer can also be applied to a laundry room design. If you do choose to add it, you will most likely have the space and opportunity to add more than one pull-out cabinet organizer for laundry hampers. This will make sorting laundry by color and water temperature a breeze.

Can you add pull-out shelves to existing cabinets?

Yes, you can absolutely add pull-out shelves to your existing cabinets. Most standard kitchen and bathroom base cabinets can be retrofitted with roll-out trays, spice racks, or trash bin pull-outs. To do this, you simply need to accurately measure the interior width, depth, and door opening clearance of your current cabinets to ensure a proper fit for the new hardware and tracks.

What are the best pull-out organizers for deep corner cabinets?

The best pull-out organizers for deep corner cabinets are Lazy Susans, Blind Corner Optimizers (Magic Corners), and Kidney-Shaped Pull-Out Shelves. Because deep corner cabinets naturally create dead space that is hard to reach, these specialized organizers pivot, rotate, or pull entirely out of the cabinet door opening. This brings your pots, pans, and dry goods directly to you, eliminating the need to crawl into the back of the cabinet.

However, keep timing in mind: for most corner cabinets, you cannot add an organizer after the countertop has been installed, as the opening becomes too restricted to fit the heavy hardware inside. Always plan and install these mechanisms before the counters go down.

How do I choose the right size pull-out cabinet organizer?

To choose the right size pull-out cabinet organizer, you must measure the cabinet's clear opening width, interior depth, and interior height. Always measure the narrowest point of the opening, accounting for protruding cabinet hinges or door frames. For example, if you want a spice rack or utility organizer, you can utilize narrow 6-inch or 9-inch spaces.

For larger cookware or waste bins, you will typically need a clear opening width of 15 to 21 inches. Because hardware clearance requirements can vary by model, it is highly recommended to speak with one of our team members to confirm your measurements before placing an order.

What is the difference between a roll-out tray and a pull-out drawer?

The main difference is that a roll-out tray is hidden behind a standard cabinet door, while a pull-out drawer replaces the door entirely with a single integrated drawer front.

  • Roll-out trays require a two-step process: you open the cabinet door first, then slide the tray out. They are ideal for retrofitting existing cabinets, but they usually max out around 25-50 lbs.
  • Pull-out drawers (or deep base drawers) require just one step: you pull the handle, and the entire storage unit glides out immediately, making them a highly efficient choice for new kitchen designs. Additionally, depending on the size, drawers are built to handle much heavier loads around 75+ lbs, making them better suited for heavy pots and pans.
