A Tall, Dark, and Storage-Friendly Kitchen with Style

August 21, 20131 comment

Brian, the client, knows that great style with great function doesn’t have to come from a huge budget. For his remodel, Brian was focused on packing in storage and tying the outside patio into the kitchen.

With a rough idea in mind, Brian came to CliqStudios for some fine tuning of his kitchen design.

Storage from floor to ceiling.

Jam-packed with storage

Due to the space limitations, we had to be smart with the cabinetry layout to achieve the storage Brian required. To maximize capacity, we used 42″ tall upper cabinets, extending them to the ceiling. In the base cabinets, we incorporated a tray organizer and deep drawers for pots and pans, along with a spice pull-out and large easy-reach cabinet on both sides of the range.

Beautiful, large window lets the light shine in.

A window for entertaining

One of the best parts of the kitchen is the sliding glass window that’s level with the beautiful marble countertop. This window lets in so much light that keeps the dark Birch Sable Dayton cabinets from crowding the space. Just beyond the window is a secondary outdoor countertop with barstool seating. This ties the patio area and indoor spaces together and is perfect for entertaining.

Above the window, we ran 12″-high cabinets the length of the peninsula below. This secured a sense of cohesiveness in the space and, of course, created a little more storage. Small lights were added underneath these cabinets to illuminate the kitchen and counter areas at night.

Perfect work triangle with plenty of counter space.

Positioning the appliances

In small kitchens, locating large appliances can be tricky. This was the case in Brian’s kitchen too. We centered the range on the far wall. Above it, we bumped the microwave out a few inches so it would sit flush with the front of the range below.

Along the adjacent wall, across from the sink, we placed the counter-depth refrigerator. Not only does this positioning provide an excellent work triangle, but it also allows for a larger peninsula with more seating, a wider walkway, and a separate landing and serving area too.

Together Brian and his CliqStudios designer created an awesome space. The Birch Sable cabinets pair so nicely with lighter marble counters. And the window area is just fantastic! Brian loves it, and so did we.
