Adjustable Shelves for Kitchen Cabinets

Adjustable shelves are shelves that are not fixed to a single placement within a kitchen cabinet, they can be moved up or down based on personal preference. To make these shelves movable, there are a series of pre-drilled holes along with wooden pegs to hold them in place. These shelves can be perfectly positioned to supply the amount of space needed to store particular kitchen items, from electric mixers to dishes and colanders. The most common materials used to create adjustable shelves are wood, metal, or particle board.

How Do You Build a Cabinet with Adjustable Shelves?

To construct a kitchen cabinet complete with a set of adjustable shelves, a few steps need to be taken to ensure they are up to industry standard in regards to stability and finish. First, a series of holes will need to be drilled into the interior of the kitchen cabinets, on both the left and right sides. After that, the shelves themselves will need to be cut precisely to fit within the cabinet. To fit snuggly into the cabinet, wooden pegs will need to be placed on either side of the shelf.

These pegs should be installed within 2 out of the entire series of holes you have drilled into the interior of your kitchen cabinets. These wooden pegs will allow for the adjustable shelves to remain movable when desired but stay in place and secure when the right height is achieved. This process will then need to be repeated for the remainder of the kitchen cabinets you would like to have movable shelving installed within.

How Do You Make Strong Adjustable Shelves?

There are a few simple, yet effective, ways to strengthen and reinforce the adjustable shelves that you install. Two of the most popular strategies that can be used in order to accomplish this as well as give you peace of mind are either to add a wooden lip or 2 to the shelf itself or to use a very thick, durable wood throughout the construction of the adjustable shelving.

You will also want to make sure that the type of wood you are using for the construction of these shelves is the same wood that was used to manufacture your kitchen cabinets. This will ensure that a cohesive look and feel is achieved and that the shelving doesn’t become an eye sore. How Do You Move Adjustable Shelves?

Switching the position of adjustable shelves to varying heights is a very simple process. First off, you’ll need to push up against the shelf itself to loosen the wooden pegs on both sides and pull them out of the holes they’ve been resting in. Then, the wooden pegs on the sides of the shelf will need to be lined up with the holes (at the new height) that you want to place them within. Lastly, secure the shelf at the new height by placing the pegs inside of the drilled holes and pushing them to secure them in place.

Make sure to check the stability of the adjustable shelves before you place any items on them, especially if they are heavy items such as small appliances like electronic mixers. You can talk to your CliqStudios designer about the pros and cons of incorporating these shelves into your design.

Is It Cheaper to Build Your Own Shelves?

Generally speaking, it does in fact cost less to build your own set of adjustable shelves. Of course, this is if everything is done correctly throughout the design, construction, and installation processes. However, costs can begin to add up quickly if errors are made in any of these processes.

So, you may find it more convenient to hire a professional contractor to complete this project for you. This may also turn out to be more cost-effective, as it will allow you to avoid added costs throughout the manufacturing and installation of these adjustable shelves.
