Furniture-style Island with Corbels and Arched Valance

FairmontMaple Caramel Jute Glaze

In the photo below you see a kitchen island so beautifully styled it appears to be a lovely traditional piece of furniture. As such, it provides a perfect transition between the working kitchen and adjacent living and dining areas. The furniture effect is created with decorative solid hardwood corbels, wall cabinets used as rear island cabinets, with open shelves peeking out from under a maple valance and the whole island trimmed with ogee base molding. Black quartzite countertop presents a dressy, formal front.

In the background you can see white perimeter cabinets, with sections bumped out to create furniture features at intervals.

The trend toward open kitchens has driven the movement to trim kitchen cabinets to provide a furniture look, since the kitchen work zones are not separated from the family room or dining room, but are in fact an entertainment zone of their own. White and maple cabinets are tied together visually by similarities in style and decorative hardware.
