Note the cooking zone is backed by broad windows – an interesting design challenge.

CliqStudios is delighted to announce we will be providing kitchen design services and cabinets for This Old House Idea House 2016.

In 2015 This Old House constructed the first Idea House in Cloudland Station, Tennessee. The home married historical architectural detail with modern amenities. The response to the house and its classic-yet-comfortable style was overwhelmingly successful, so there was no question about a second project. This Old House Idea House 2016 will be The Farmhouse, one of 124 homes at Emerson Green, a planned neighborhood in northern Massachusetts.

The project proposal outlined the standards set for This Old House Idea House 2016:

  • High-value/quality construction
  • Low-maintenance/long-lasting materials
  • Net zero/energy-efficient
  • Smart use of space/storage
  • Classic farmhouse curb appeal
  • Fresh décor for today’s lifestyle

Looking over those guidelines, we knew this project was a natural fit for our company. Our commitment to high value, quality in construction and long-lasting materials is absolute (our cabinets have a lifetime warranty). Our kitchen designers are experts at optimizing space, smart use of storage and personalized design. And our Austin inset Shaker cabinet is a perfect expression of classic farmhouse style.

But we still wondered – did something else set our company apart so we were chosen? I called This Old House’s Claudia Jepsen with that question. “Our readers and viewers are cost-conscious, hands-on DIY types. They like to be fully informed and expect to be closely involved in their projects,” replied Claudia. “CliqStudios’ openness about construction details, one-on-one kitchen design service and factory-direct pricing provide the value they are looking for.”

She described our customers perfectly! We are impressed daily with what amazing, creative, capable people they are. We look forward to following this project – check back soon to read our next Idea House article, about the special challenges the layout presented for kitchen designer AJ Johnson.

      Hello, Julian,

There are several factors involved in placing a range in front of a window, including local building codes and venting. In this design, the cabinets are pushed forward to make room for a downdraft vent behind the cooktop. If you send your measurements and home address to our design studio, one of our experts will be happy to help you develop a design. (We never charge for design services.) Send us the measurements, your city and state, and any other information about your kitchen plan through the form on our Free Design page or email us at designteam@cliqstudios.com.
